What is the author's tone in Stage Door. by George S. Kaufman?

The play has humorous parts and is generally referred to as a comedy. However, there are dramatic and tragic parts in the play as well. Linda gives up a career to get married to someone she seems less than thrilled with. The most tragic part is when Kaye, who is out of money and out of luck, commits suicide. Mrs. Orcutt laments about the reputation of the Floodlights Club. She concludes that she should have never let Kaye move in. But Terry recognizes the vulnerability of all the naïve and hopeful girls in the house. Terry tells Mrs. Orcutt not to be upset about letting Kaye live there. Terry tells her, "It might have been any one of us" (p. 328).
