By dividing the novel, Speak, into four Marking Periods, the author focuses on each part of the school year. In addition, the author uses small sections within the marking periods, which are subtitled and serve to pique the readers interest.... to keep us reading. Each marking period starts with the quest to name the mascot and ends with Melinda's report card.
