Melinda attends an assembly on her first day at Merryweather High. She sits alone. Nobody sits with her. A girl who introduces herself as Heather from Ohio—asks to sit with her. Melinda does nothing to converse with her. This foreshadows Miranda's sense of isolation through the book.

The art room is filled with light and a radio plays Melinda's favorite station. This foreshadows a bit of light that will come into Melinda's life through art.
