Melinda removes a mirror from her closet. It has served as a reminder of how much she does not like who she is. The act of removing the mirror symbolizes her move toward self discovery and toward liking who she is. She replaces the mirror with a poster of Maya Angelou because Ms. Angelou is her hero. Ms. Angelou's poetry is often about speaking up, speaking out, and speaking the truth.
