A symbol of social class, clothes also reveal personalities and represent events. Winsome makes Martha change out of her sweatshirt and bicycle shorts for Christmas dinner. After Martha’s suicide attempt, her mother begins “wearing sack dresses; waistless, muslin or linen, invariably purple, layered over one another” (32); her wardrobe choices improve with sobriety.
