The element of fire mostly appears in the words of secondary characters. Nicholas sets forth the most important goal of a troubled life: “ideally, you want to figure out the reason why you keep burning your own house down” (96). Martha returns to that image several times, even wanting to “go outside and set [her journal] on fire (314) when she reads it over.
