When Paul paints at the kitchen and his mother tells him that his father injured. What does mean that??(the act of painting)

The act of painting in Sons and Lovers could be representative of trying to 'whitewash' over things, to cover up things that can't be covered up. They may be disguised and made to look presentable, but under the layer of paint, it still is what it is.
