Paul faces emotional conflicts throughout the novel, most based around his deference to his mother and desire for her complete approval. Paul loses his place in the valley because his mother insists that mining is below him, he refuses to make independent choices because he follows his mother's will rather than his own, and he is unable to build a loving relationship with the womwn he is attracted to because he is unable to sever the bond he shares with his mother.
