One way in which Ocol's westernization alienated him from his own people can be found in his relationship with his wife. Lawino sees her marriage to Ocol disintegrate as a result of his westernization. He turns his back on the culture that she embraces, and he looks down on his people and their culture.... believing that that it should be eradicated by the culture he now considers himself a part of.
