Chet Morrow is the editor of Harper's magazine, Morrow commissions the narrator, Robert C. "Bobby" Luczak, a minor poet, to fly to Calcutta, India, and collect newly-found materials from the supposedly-deceased poet M. Das. Morrow arranges for M. L. Chatterjee of the Bengali Writers' Union to pick them up at the airport and settle them in their hotel. Everything goes wrong as the sinister forces of the goddess Kali intervene.
