Charley believes that joining the army is exciting and glorious. He is attracted by the pay and the opportunity to help his mother financially. Rumor has it that the war will quickly be over, no more than a month or two. The people in Charley's town are celebrating the war.... their reaction is circus-like, and the people envision a quick victory. They are very wrong. Charley will soon learn that battle is not exciting, that pay isn't regular, and that the victory is a long, long time in coming.
