In Chapter 27, Ibrahim and young Aissatou serve as a symbol of the modern future, a future that does not have its share of problems but they are problems that can be surmounted with freedom, love, and understanding. Ibrahim injects hope into a house that did not have much hope left and he will be a wonderful father in time. The old values that Rama wants to carry forth into the new world are all falling into place but they are coming from a place of freedom and choice, rather than from an enforced duty.
