Yoko was a young girl traveling on the train with Shimamura. Shimamura believed her to be unmarried, though she was traveling with a man who appeared to be ill. He was taken with the girl's appearance, as well as her voice. Before her death, Yoko asked Shimamura if she could return with him to Tokyo.
