The novel is set in the world of the New York City subway. This is a world made up of people who rush to and from their destinations. They hop on and off trains. The subway platform teems with people rushing about, especially in the morning commute. Slake does not go above ground, so the reader only sees the underground world. There is a lunch counter where Slake works. There is a coffee vendor and a shop to buy various things. Slake spends a lot of time riding trains all over the city.
