Physical Death:

In the opening of the play, Sizwe Banzi is dead, but we later learn that he has afked his death and changed his identity. This false, physical death is a means of survival.

Death to Society:

Sizwe faking his own death and taking on a new identity also marks the death of his former self and life. Sizwe has abandoned all he knew and is for all intents and purposes is dead to the world... he past has been erased.
