The novel is split into a prologue set seven years before the story which follows Nash, Tamsin, and Cabell’s last successful attempt to find the dagger of King Arthur, only for Nash to go missing, seemingly abandoning them. This is followed by three sections that detail Tamsin's journey from learning about the Ring of Dispel, the group's time in Avalon, and Tamsin's return to the mortal world with her new friends. These sections are then further broken down into 49 chapters, but only the sections themselves have names pertaining to the events that take place. Each section and the chapters within them happen very quickly after the previous ones, with only small time skips between scenes when appropriate. These usually skip no more than a day or two, which displays the immediacy of the conflict and how both the main characters and all of Avalon have very little time left. Furthermore, since the novel follows only Tamsin’s thoughts, other events (such as Cabell’s decision to join Lord Death) happen alongside the events she experiences, but are not revealed until much later.
