Who is Baldabiou from Silk and what is their importance?

Baldabiou is a mysterious figure in that he has no history and no future. He inexplicably appears in the town of Lavilledieu and begins its silk manufacturing industry without assistance. Baldabiou is described as direct, focused, influential, and powerful. He also serves as a mentor to the younger men in town. In the end, Baldabiou leaves town as mysteriously as he appeared.
