How does silk affect the Indian subcontinent?

In the novel, Silk, there is a very real depiction of how the commodity, silk, shaped everything from a culture to trade routes. This put India on the map, so to speak, and brought untold wealth into the area. Because of this, they were exposed to new cultures, ideas, and materials never before experienced.
