William, jealous of Marner, hatched a plot to frame Marner and disgrace him in the community. One night, while Marner was sitting watch at the deathbed of a deacon of Lantern Yard, he was struck with one of his fits. William then stole a pouch of the deacon's money and placed Marner's knife near where the pouch had been.
