Why was Siddhartha not satisfied with the Samanas?

Although Siddhartha learned much in a short time from the Samanas, he always found that he returned to the same "self". Siddhartha wanted a way out from the self. He found that his meditations were merely escapisms like drinking alcohol. He did not feel changed.
