I think, that from a Buddhist perspective, both of them hold on to the self. It is their ego that they can't let go of so they are unable to love. They lack a sense of selflessness and empathy.

This is such an interesting topic for me. Spiritual development for me is the path to enlightenment. And I'm taking small steps towards it. True, I had mental health problems that did not allow me to develop.
