Mabel Pervin appears in the story, Horse Dealer's Daughter. She is the daughter of a horse dealer, who has recently passed away. She cared for her father and brothers for many years when the family fortune was still present, and even after. While wealthy, however, Mabel felt safe and confident, knowing that she needed no one to maintain her life. Once the family fortune is depleted, Mabel's life turns upside down, and she becomes despondent and depressed. With nothing left to look forward to and no one left to take care of, Mabel attempts to take her own life.
