Joanna appears in the short-story, The Nightingales Sing. She is described as a young woman who has led a normal, middle class life. Her life is well structured and safe. When Joanna spends time with older individuals at a ranch house in the country, she learns of a life outside of the one she knows. In this new life, she learns about dangerous jobs, heartache, and love. After returning home, she begins to face her life in a new way, knowing that there is more than what her own family sees day to day and wanting more.
