What is Orwell’s personal motivation for killing the elephant?

As an agent and representative of the British Empire, Orwell finds himself expected to shoot the elephant. The villagers see him as the man with the power: the power of Britain to protect them from an outside force. Orwell would look weak if he did not shoot the elephant.
