in my opinion,as the narrator would have guilty conscience if the elephant was killed by him.but at length he killed that animal due to consensus's persistance.ask for me;we can recoil to the proverb "When in the room do as the room as do". If he would not kill that animal, he would have been castigated by the consensus that were covered him.
