The author uses foreshadowing in the beginning of the section titled, High Seas, when describing Ric and Rac, who share a hatred of all humanity and animals. Ric and Rac attempt to throw the ship's cat overboard, as well as Bebe, and almost succeed. in tossing Bebe, who almost drowns. Note, more attention is given to the bulldog than to the man, who died in the rescue attempt.
