Parenting is another theme in the book. Misty, Cassie's mother, talks about the difficulties of parenting. After the massacre at Columbine High School, people wondered why the parents of the killers hadn't picked up on the clues their sons gave regarding their attraction to violence. Misty understood how difficult parenting was since she went through a tough time with her own children, especially Cassie.
