Wine bottles come to represent weaponry.When Sharpe orders Harper to break all of the wine bottles, Harper disobeys, but this is fortunate since the English later break these bottles on the bridge to construct makeshift caltrops which prevent the French from crossing the bridge to the fort, allowing Sharpe's men to win the skirmish.
