In the novel, Shane, the stump respresents old struggles. These are struggles that are so deeply rooted that they won't be suppressed or ignored for too long. It takes great strength and assistance to actually rid oneself of these types of struggles. When Shane helps Joe uproot it, it signifies something quite momentus. The old problem is gone. Additionally, is symbolizes the power of both men to work toegher.
