In Chapter Four, Lily's neighbor Carlton stops by to warn Lily that the police seem to be suspicious of her relative to the murder. Lily seems not to worry, but she is an expert at hiding her feelings. Carlton is described as good looking and single, which foreshadows a future relationship in the story between the two.
