Coming of age is a recurring idea in the narrative. Two of the characters, Peggy Jean and Max, make great strides toward coming to know and understand themselves over the course of this story. Both go through these changes not because they want to, but because circumstances force them to. What's interesting about this is that both felt they were happy in their situations but both seem to find themselves in better places because of the changes in their lives.
