Florence is the descendant of black great-grandparents who were freed from slavery in Louisiana. They walked all the way to Colorado where they started their family. They called themselves seedfolk because they were the first black people to live in that particular county in Colorado. Florence believes that the people who started the garden in the vacant lot in Cleveland are also a form of seedfolk. Florence is unable to participate in the gardening because of arthritis in her hands but she loves to watch the progress. She is saddened when winter comes and the garden is silent. She rejoices when she sees an Oriental girl (Kim) planting lima beans when spring does finally come.
