Each narrator tells his story in a voice that is unique to that character in dialect, speech pattern, and use of figures of speech or other types of jargon. Fleischman uses these unique speech patterns in order to demonstrate the differences in the people he uses to tell the story. The language demonstrates differences in intelligence as well as differences in fluency with the English language, illustrating how long some of the immigrants have been in America.
