Who is William in Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan?

William is Sarah's brother. Though we never meet him, William is a great influence and large part of Sarah's life. When William got married, Sarah made her decision to move away, so his wife could move into the position as woman of the house without her interference. This decision illustrates Sarah's unselfishness, as well as her thoughtful nature.
