I'm not sure I see a struggle with society. Sarah, Plain and Tall takes place in the Midwest, and the characters are deeply connected to the harsh natural world. People on these homesteads constantly battle squalls and dark freezing winters. When Sarah comes to join them, she has to get used to this. It is a struggle but she perceivers.
