From what I remember, Julia is deeply affected by Sarah's guilt over her brother's death...... Sarah never forgave herself for locking her brother in the cupboard, an act that would be responsible for the loss of his life. When she returns to Paris and finds his body, Sarah questions are answered...... he is no longer alive to rescue.

Julia is deeply moved by Sarah's story...... having the abortion in order to placate those who believed it was for the best was not the right choice. She couldn't have lived with the guilt..... but she could live with having her child and raising it alone.
