William Clark, born 1770, acts as the meta-fictional narrator for about one half of the novel. He is presented as one of two principle protagonists in the novel. Biographical information about Clark's life is not detailed in the novel. He served in the military and was the commanding officer of Meriwether Lewis for a brief period of time. During this military service the men became close friends.
