Ruth meets Mrs. Mary Leon while vacationing at Beach Cliff. Mrs. Leon is described as wealthy and very beautiful. She also initially seems to be rigid and cold. Ruth later discovers that her original assessment is Mrs. Leon was incorrect. Before the novel's end, Mary Leon dies in an insane asylum.
