Harry and Ruth employed Johnny Galt as a field worker. After Harry's death, Ruth and the girls moved into a boardinghouse, and Johnny was one of the few people who thought of them in their time of grief. Johnny sent Ruth and the children a bouquet of flowers and a basket of apples. Johnny later becomes a fireman and saves Ruth and her daughters from the burning inn.
