Johnny Galt worked as a field hand for Harry and Ruth. After Harry died, and Ruth and the girls move into a boardinghouse, Johnny was one of the few people who kept in touch. He sent Ruth and the girls a bouquet of flowers and a basket of apples. Later in the story, we learn that Johnny was the brave fireman who saved Ruth and her daughters from the burning inn.
