Nearly all of the characters suffer from some form of mental illness, whether they admit it or not. The most obvious character is Deidre, whose metal illness brings about many of the occurrences in the story. Her mental illness introduces Dr. Finch. Likewise, her psychotic episode brings about the trip the Rhode Island that changes everyone's life, because he causes her to admit the truth about her relationship with Dr. Finch to Augusten.
