In Tom Stoppard's play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern really do not know what is going on in the castle. They do not know how they are being used by the king and queen. Similarly, the two even are confused about how they are supposed to even converse with Hamlet. Hamlet is not really sure why his two friends have come to visit. Do they want to see him? Have the king and queen put them up to it and for what reason?
