Does Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead) pay homage to Hamlet or does it ridicule it?

I think it is a homage. There is little in Shakespeare's play about this hapless duo. Seeing things from their point of view gives fans of Shakespeare more to think about and enjoy.
