In the opening paragraphs, Grace Ansley is described as small, pale, and unsure of herself. Alida Slade, on the other hand, is higher in color, a confident woman. These details foreshadow the fact that Grace finds Alina intimidating, and that Alina is the more domineering of the two women.

When author writes, “Half guiltily she withdrew from her handsomely mounted black handbag a twist of red crimson”, she foreshadows the fact that Grace is a bit afraid of Alida, and that she has secrets Alida is unaware of.
