Cassir faces prejudice in a number of ways over the course of the novel. At the start of the book, Cassie comments on the differences between the white school and the black school, the fact that the white students are provided with a school bus, and the fact that black schools supples are hand me downs..... from the white school. She also experienced prejudice at Mr. Barnett's store, when he refuses to wait on her, and later, when she bumps into Lillian Jean she is forced to apologize and man-handled by Mr. Simmons. Other experiences include the "night men" arriving at the Logan home, and the problems with T.J.
