Racism is addressed throughout the text. The Wallaces, Granger, Lillian Jean, and the lynch mob are examples.

Racial Discrimination is illustrated through the schools (segregation), the bus (whites only, segregation), the Mercantile (Mr. Barnett passing over Cassie in favor of his white customers).

Mrs. Logans boycott against discrimination.
