The tone of the book is extremely combative. Richard wants to make clear that he views himself as in the right, and his opponents and critics to be wrong. From his youth, Richard admires fighting men and does his best to learn about the military. Under the mentoring of the Naval Officer Everett Barrett, Richard decides he wants to become a Naval Officer.
