Why doesn't Homer's dad support his son's dreams?

Homer Sr. only knows about mining. Mining is his life that was handed to him from his own father. Mining is his validation and identity. He cannot see anything different for his son. School and university is a foreign concept to Homer Sr. that is meant for people in a different class system.
