Written in straightforward English, the novel Roadwork is an examination of the human condition, the fragility of life, and the sometimes senseless power of government. The author takes the reader into the psyche of the main character, Bart, while he has a complete breakdown. With arguing personalities in his head, one for peace and restraint and the other for vengeance and defiance, Bart slowly shuts down. Bart loses everything.

Roadwork is written in three parts, each part spanning the period of one month beginning with November 20th, 1973, and ending with part three in January, 1974. Written originally under the pen name Richard Bachman, Roadwork was published shortly after the death of Stephen King's mother. He is the first to admit that it might not have been his best work, but it is also one of his first attempts to write something of a more serious nature. This novel is a sharp look at the conundrum of human pain, and a definite leap from his style of writing to this point.
