When Ebeneezer found Charlotte hiding in his stable, she asked him to let her work there in exchange for a place to sleep and food. Although Ebeneezer knew that Charlotte was female, he never told anyone else or discussed it with Charlotte. Charlotte’s way with horses reminded Ebeneezer of his own daughter who had died. When Mr. Millshark showed up looking for Charlotte, Ebeneezer told him that he did not know about any runaway girls. Afterward, he moved Charlotte to his new stables in Rhode Island. Charlotte worked for Ebeneezer for several years, and he taught her to drive a stagecoach.
